Police Plans Squadron To Address Kidnapping, Herdsmen Attacks, Others

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, on Wednesday, said the police has concluded plans to establish Mobile Police Squadron in states prone to kidnapping, herdsmen attacks and other violent crimes.

IGP Idris said the establishment of the mobile squadron, which is the fighting arm of the Nigerian police, has become necessary to curb the menace of these crime which is virtually becoming the order of the day in the country.

The IGP, who made this known at the Conference with commissioners of police and above holding at the force headquarters, in Abuja, decried the activities of these hoodlums who have continued to make live unbearable for innocent Nigerians.

He said the police along with the military and other security agencies would not rest until the nation is completely rid of criminals and their activities.

Idris, while noting that the police has recorded tremendous successes in restoring law and order in southern Kaduna, Benue, Kogi, Imo, Abia states and other parts of the country where kidnapping, herdsmen attacks and other violent crime is rife, said the police also made huge recoveries in arms, ammunitions and other dangerous weapons in those areas.

He said that the quantity of weapons recovered in Benue state alone following the attack on Kastina-Ala, attack, was enough for any criminal group to wage a war with any country they want to.

The IGP, said the police has made several arrests of persons suspected to have been involved in the attack that resulted in the death of several persons and many others injured, but that the leader of the gang was still at large.

He said that the recovered weapons would be converted to official use because of their sophistication.

He said “the police has made tremendous successes in tacking

kid napping, herdsmen attacks in some states of the federation and we made a lot of recovery in the area of weapons.

“In-fact the kind of weapons we recovered in Benue, is enough for anybody to engage a country in a war”.

To effectively curb the menace of crimes in the country, the IGP, called on state commissioners of police to approach governors of their various states to provide buildings for the smooth take off of more mobile squadrons as well as lands to the police to build post service housing schemes.

He assured Nigerians of the determination of the police to protect lives and property even as he called on the public to continue to partner with the police by reporting cronies activities promptly.
